OPAL: Outdoor Play and Learning

OPAL is an award-winning programme that helps schools make playtimes more active, creative and inclusive. It recognises that play is an essential part of childhood, helping children learn, build friendships and develop confidence.

Through varied outdoor play opportunities, children can explore, use their imaginations, solve problems and work together. From building and creating to enjoying imaginative adventures, OPAL encourages children to follow their interests and develop new skills.

The aim is simple: to give every child enjoyable, enriching playtimes that support their wellbeing and development.

Wondering what OPAL Play could look like at our school? This short film shows it in action at another primary school, where children are discovering new ways to play, make friends and build confidence.

Soon, our own outdoor spaces will offer more opportunities for children to follow their interests, try new challenges and create their own fun. We’re looking forward to seeing where their ideas take them!
